Overview of Need: 

Customer is building a data warehouse using the Kimball group dimensional modeling methodology.  This data warehouse is being consumed by IBM Cognos.  Currently the project is in need of some expertise that it can use to evaluate what has been built to this point and advise us on how to best move forward using industry standards.  This person will work closely with business and the current data warehouse team to facilitate knowledge transfer so they can gain the skills to model new data sources and support the existing data warehouse.  The star schemas need to be modeled in a way that allow easy and intuitive report authoring using a single star schema but also across multiple star schemas with particular attention paid to fact data living at different time granularities.

Description of Duties: (In order of importance) 

  • Work with customers to gain knowledge of business rules and source data by creating BUS matrices that will guide writing the SQL and T-SQL statements to load the dimension and fact tables.
  • Build/Write ETL processes using SQL and T-SQL to load dimension and fact tables assuring they will be inserting, updating, and deleting according to business’ requirements.
  • Create report packages using dimensions and facts in IBM Cognos FrameWork Manager assuring proper aggregation for multi fact queries across different date granularity.
  • Help develop and document best practices for transforming business reporting needs into robust data models. 

Skill Sets Required: 

  • Operating Systems – 5yrs, Advanced Skill level with SQL Server and 10yrs with Windows Server
  • Programming Language/ Development tools – Expert with SQL, T-SQL, Cognos FrameWork Manager
  • Database Systems/Database tools – Advanced with SQL Server and SQL Server Agent
  • Frameworks/SLDs/Methodologies – Expert with Kimball methodology.  Advanced Skill with Dimensional      Modeling / Star Schema design
  • Mentoring: While Technical expertise is extremely important, it is also important to have a good mentor       to assure clarity of concepts and knowledge transfer.
  •  Preferred: DataManager experience – We primarily use DataManager as our ETL tool.  It would be    preferred if the user had skills in creating jobs and jobs streams in this tool.
